Window 3 - The Lamp and the Bible

The Psalmist stated it clearly; “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105) The Bible is a light, which can direct your immediate steps, or light up the pathway ahead. In Bible times, the lamp was known as a foot-lamp that was carried on the end of a stick to hold it near to one’s feet, as well as to project it down the path.

The light of the Word identifies with the light of salvation. He who was proclaimed in John 1:1 as the Word also said, “I am the light of the world.” John in his epistle adds that in Christ “was life: and the life was the light of men.”

Again, Christ identifies with the light when he exhorts, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer.” “Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you.” (John 12:35) Christ is the perfect pattern and the Bible is the perfect precept. To walk in obedience to the Bible is to walk in the footsteps of Jesus.

There is also the light of the prophetic Word. “We have the word of the prophets made more certain... as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” (2 Peter 1:19) When all the lights of earth have gone out, the lights of heaven will burn brightest. The New Jerusalem will be a city, which “does not need the sun nor the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” (Revelation 21:23)

The Bible gives us light on:

  • The way of salvation
  • Christian walk
  • Our hope for the future
  • Our heavenly destination
